Why Did Jio Platforms List at a Premium?
A listing premium reflects demand and supply on listing day. Several factors were likely at play:
- Institutional demand. QIB bids of over 70x showed strong interest from large investors.
- Scale and market position. Jio is India's largest mobile operator by subscribers, with more than 524 million subscribers and about half of mobile broadband share.
- Profitability. FY26 EBITDA margin was about 52%, with profit after tax of about ₹30,050 crore on revenue of about ₹1.47 lakh crore.
- Improving balance sheet. Net debt to EBITDA has fallen from 0.88x in FY24 to 0.36x in FY26, and the IPO proceeds will repay borrowings.
- Rarity. It is one of very few opportunities to own a direct stake in India's digital and telecom leader.
- Limited free float. The issue was about 2.9% of post-issue capital, so only a small share of the company is available to trade.
