Jio Platforms IPO: Overview

Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), the digital and telecom subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has announced a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share for its initial public offering. The issue opens on 21 October 2026 and closes on 23 October 2026.

At the top of the band, the issue is worth about ₹30,213 crore. That would make it India's largest IPO, ahead of Hyundai Motor India (₹27,858.75 crore, 2024) and LIC (₹20,557.23 crore, 2022). Both of those were offers for sale. Jio's is a fresh issue, so the money goes to the company.

The fresh issue of 27 crore shares is about 2.9% of post-issue capital. Reliance will therefore keep a clear majority after listing.

Valuation: What to Keep in Mind

The offer documents do not state a company valuation. Two reference points can help.

  • Approximate math: 27 crore shares at about 2.9% of post-issue capital implies roughly 931 crore total shares. At ₹1,119 that is a market capitalisation of about ₹10.4 lakh crore, or around 35 times FY26 earnings. This is my own estimate, not a company figure. Check it against the RHP.
  • Reported bankers' range: Media reports citing Bloomberg mention a proposed valuation of $130–170 billion. This is unofficial and not part of the offer documents.

Compare Jio with listed telecom and digital peers on EV/EBITDA and P/E before deciding. Look at growth, debt and capital intensity, not just the headline number.

Strengths

  • Scale and leadership: Nearly half of mobile broadband share and over 524 million subscribers.
  • Profitability: EBITDA margin of about 52% and PAT of ₹30,049 crore in FY26.
  • Improving balance sheet: Net debt to EBITDA fell from 0.88x to 0.36x in two years.
  • Rising ARPU: ₹181.7 to ₹214.0 over FY24–FY26.
  • Strong backers: Global investors such as Meta, Google, KKR, Silver Lake and PIF.
  • Fresh issue: All proceeds go to the company, and the IPO reduces debt.
  • Growth runway: Fixed broadband reaches only about 21% of households, and the digital economy is projected to grow strongly by FY2031.

Risks

  • Concentration risk: Reliance Retail is the sole distributor of prepaid services, which made up about 77.08% of FY26 consolidated revenue.
  • Parent dependence: Reliance holds 66.43% and will keep control.
  • Competition and pricing: Telecom is a competitive sector, and tariff changes can move ARPU and margins.
  • Capital intensity: 5G and fibre rollouts need continued heavy investment. ROCE at 10.76% is modest.
  • Regulatory risk: Spectrum costs, licence terms and policy changes can affect earnings.
  • Valuation: A large issue at a high multiple leaves less room for disappointment.
  • Churn: Churn rose from 1.52% in FY24 to 1.67% in FY26.
