19-Oct-2026 | 15:15
Japan?s Nikkei 225 fell 0.62% to close at 64,916 on Monday, extending losses from the previous week as technology stocks remained under pressure. Investors continued to worry about whether heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure will generate enough returns, given Japanese companies? exposure to the global AI boom.

However, selling pressure eased after US stock futures rebounded sharply following heavy losses on Friday. Among the major laggards, Taiyo Yuden fell 4.9%, Lasertec declined 3.9%, Ibiden dropped 2.6%, Tokyo Electron lost 2.6%, and SoftBank Group fell 2%.

Kioxia shares also remained under pressure after reports showed that leveraged long positions in the stock reached around ?920 billion last week, the highest among companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Investors are now awaiting Japan?s upcoming trade and inflation data for further clues about the country?s economic outlook.
