Chinese stocks mixed as trade tensions with the EU weigh on sentiment

16-Oct-2026 | 15:05
Chinese markets ended mixed on Friday as investors remained concerned about ongoing trade tensions between China and the European Union (EU). The Shanghai Composite rose 0.24% to 3,716.3, while the Shenzhen Component fell 0.12% to 11,802.5, its lowest level in over a year.

Concerns grew after the EU considered new measures to restrict access to its single market and began reviewing import data to identify possible surges in goods entering the region. These steps could lead to quotas on more Chinese products. China warned that it would retaliate against new EU trade measures or restrictions targeting Chinese companies and products.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities stepped up efforts to support the stock market by encouraging companies and state funds to buy shares and asking some investors to reduce selling pressure. Energy stocks performed well, with PetroChina rising 1.35% and Sinopec gaining 2.03%.

However, losses in several major stocks weighed on market sentiment. CATL fell 0.54%, NAURA Technology dropped 2.68%, and East Money Information declined 1.15%.

For the week, both markets recorded sharp losses. The Shanghai Composite fell 2.56%, while the Shenzhen Component plunged 6.64%, reflecting continued investor caution amid trade uncertainties and weak market sentiment.
