Economic Buzz: Australia employment falls by 39,300 in September

Australia?s employment fell by 39,300 to 14.78 million in September 2026, reversing a downwardly revised increase of 29,300 in August. The decline was driven by a sharp drop of 73,700 in part-time jobs, which outweighed a rise of 34,400 in full-time employment. The employment-to-population ratio eased to 63.6% from 63.9%, while the participation rate slipped to 66.8% from 67.0%. Despite the monthly setback, employment remained 168,300, or 1.2%, higher than a year earlier.
