Global Markets:
Asian market fell on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, tracking overnight weakness in US technology stocks as concerns over elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions weighed on investor sentiment.
Technology stocks led the selloff, following losses in US semiconductor shares amid concerns over intensifying competition between US and Chinese chipmakers and questions over the sustainability of artificial intelligence-related investments.
Wall Street ended mixed on Monday as investors awaited the third-quarter earnings season and key US economic data due this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 195.60 points, or 0.38%, to close at 51,850.55. The S&P 500 fell 4.30 points, or 0.06%, to 7,807.24, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 120.27 points, or 0.44%, to 27,245.90. Technology and semiconductor stocks weighed on the broader market, while energy shares benefited from higher oil prices.
Crude oil prices remained elevated above $105 a barrel amid renewed concerns over global energy supplies following attacks on Saudi Arabia and uncertainty surrounding a proposed Russia-Ukraine energy truce. Brent crude futures were trading around $105.90 a barrel in Asian trade on Tuesday, after settling 1.84% higher at $106.65 on Monday. Rising energy prices have heightened concerns about inflation and the potential impact on interest rates.
Investors are now focused on the September US Consumer Price Index (CPI), scheduled for Wednesday, 14 October, followed by the Producer Price Index (PPI) and retail sales data on Thursday, 15 October. The inflation readings will be closely watched for their implications for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy, particularly as higher energy costs risk prolonging inflationary pressures.
The US third-quarter earnings season is also gathering pace, with major banks including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo scheduled to report results on Tuesday. Investors will assess the results for signals on consumer spending, lending demand, credit quality and the broader economic outlook.
Domestic Market:
The key equity benchmarks ended lower on Monday, extending their cautious trend as investors awaited India's September inflation data. Persistent concerns over elevated crude oil prices and a sharp rise in Indian bond yields weighed on sentiment. Although oil prices retreated amid hopes of easing geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Brent crude remained above $105 a barrel, keeping concerns over imported inflation and pressure on the rupee in focus. Investors also assessed the implications of the Reserve Bank of India's recent tightening measures for liquidity and borrowing costs. The Nifty settled below the 22,400 mark, while sectoral performance remained mixed, with auto and realty shares advancing even as FMCG and PSU bank stocks declined.
The S&P BSE Sensex declined 547.65 points or 0.76% to 71,924.68. The Nifty 50 index dropped 157.10 points or 0.70% to 22,363.35.
