Nifty trades below 22,650; consumer durables share decline
At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, tanked 361.75 points or 0.50% to 72,706.06. The Nifty 50 index lost 161.95 points or 0.71% to 22,614.15.
In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index declined 0.39% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 0.23%.
The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1,926 shares rose and 2,360 shares fell. A total of 244 shares were unchanged.
RBI hikes repo rate by 25 bps to 5.50%
The RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% from 5.25%, in line with expectations, after its three-day meeting on 5-7 October. The RBI raised the repo rate for the first time in nearly three years and changed its policy stance from neutral to calibrated tightening. The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate was raised to 5.25%, while the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and bank rate remained unchanged at 5.75%.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Consumer Durables index fell 1.28% to 36,280.65. The index jumped 2.26% in the past two trading sessions.
Titan Company (down 3.9%), Blue Star (down 2.09%), Whirlpool of India (down 1.79%), Voltas (down 0.85%), PG Electroplast (down 0.68%), Bata India (down 0.68%), Amber Enterprises India (down 0.63%), Dixon Technologies (India) (down 0.61%) declined.
Numbers to Track:
The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper rose 0.43% to 7.229 compared with the previous session close of 7.198.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged lower against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 96.7675 compared with its close of 96.3575 during the previous trading session.
MCX Gold futures for 4 December 2026 settlement declined 0.35% to Rs 1,49,544.
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.41% to 102.25.
The United States 10-year bond yield rose 0.68% to 5.304.
In the commodities market, Brent crude for December 2026 settlement jumped 70 cents or 0.70% to $101.28 a barrel.
