Economic Buzz: Australia?s imports rebound sharply on capital goods and gold

Australia?s goods imports jumped 5.8% month-on-month to a record AUD 46.94 billion in August 2026, reversing a revised 2.4% decline in July. The increase was led by a 22.3% surge in capital goods imports to AUD 13.21 billion, while non-monetary gold purchases more than doubled, rising 91.1% to AUD 3.16 billion. In contrast, intermediate goods imports fell 2.2%, while consumption goods declined 7.0%.
