Indices edge lower in early trade; breadth weak

The key equity benchmarks traded with minor losses in early trade, weighed down by continued selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs). Investor sentiment remained cautious amid volatility in crude oil prices and ongoing uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran conflict. Market participants also awaited the release of key monthly economic data. The Nifty traded below the 22,550 mark.

Auto, realty and media shares declined while IT and private bank shares advanced.

At 09:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex declined 175.49 points or 0.23% to 72,304.80. The Nifty 50 index fell 87.05 points or 0.38% to 22,533.40.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index declined 0.81% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index dropped 1.17%.

The market breadth was weak. On the BSE, 1,001 shares rose and 2,105 shares fell. A total of 226 shares were unchanged.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 10,148.41 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 11,271.73 crore in the Indian equity market on 30 September 2026, according to provisional data.

The Indian stock market will remain closed on Friday, 2 October 2026, on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

Stocks in Spotlight:

Aurobindo pharmaceutical advanced 1.78% after the company's subsidiary, Acrotech Biopharma Inc., announced the US launch of ADQUEY (difamilast 1%) ointment, a non-steroidal topical treatment for mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis in adults and pediatric patients aged two years and older. The launch marks Acrotech's entry into the US dermatology market. Difamilast was originally discovered by Otsuka Pharmaceutical and licensed to Acrotech Biopharma for commercialisation in the US.

NCC added 0.85%. The company has received two additional orders in September, totalling Rs 500.22 crore. Of the two orders, Rs 224.74 crore pertains to the buildings division, while Rs 275.48 crore pertains to the transportation division.

Lemon Tree Hotels advanced 1.92% after the company announced the opening of Keys Prima by Lemon Tree Hotels in Darjeeling, marking the group's first hotel in the town and further strengthening its presence in West Bengal. The 65-room hotel is managed by the company's subsidiary, Carnation Hotels.

Numbers to Track:

The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper shed 0.03% to 7.181 compared with the previous session close of 7.184.

In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 95.9100 compared with its close of 95.9475 during the previous trading session.

MCX Gold futures for 5 October 2026 settlement rose 0.67% to Rs 1,47,090.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.14% to 101.60.

The United States 10-year bond yield fell 0.23% to 5.284.

In the commodities market, Brent crude for December 2026 settlement declined 69 cents or 0.70% to $97.34 a barrel.

Global Markets:

Asian shares advanced on Thursday, with mainland China and Hong Kong markets closed for holidays.

US stocks ended mixed on Wednesday after data showed that inflation rose less than expected in August, easing expectations of an immediate Federal Reserve rate hike.

However, elevated Treasury yields limited gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 443.87 points, or 0.86%, to 50,906.05, while the S&P 500 fell 19.30 points, or 0.25%, to 7,651.54. The Nasdaq Composite rose 63.52 points, or 0.24%, to 26,861.06.

US inflation, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, rose 0.3% month-on-month in August and 3.4% year-on-year. The annual increase was below economists? expectations of 3.7%, helping reduce expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the October meeting. Core PCE inflation rose 3% year-on-year.

Micron Technology reported record fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $54.23 billion and non-GAAP earnings of $33.42 per share. The company forecast adjusted EPS of $38.15 at the midpoint for the current quarter, above market expectations. Its shares initially gained in after-hours trading before paring the move.

Crude oil prices traded lower, with Brent crude futures down 0.24% at $97.79 a barrel. Oil prices remained a key focus for investors amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and concerns over energy supply.

Investors will next focus on the US nonfarm payrolls report for September, due on Friday, for further clues on the Federal Reserve?s interest-rate path.
