Japanese stocks rebound as technology shares lead gains
The Nikkei 225 jumped 1.94% to 66,754, while the broader Topix gained 1.67%. SoftBank Group surged 6.6% after reports that OpenAI was seeking to raise at least $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation.
Other technology stocks also advanced, with Kioxia Holdings up 1.2%, Taiyo Yuden gaining 2.3% and Fujikura rising 5.9%.
Market sentiment was also helped by a sharp fall in oil prices. Saudi Arabia restored around half of the capacity of its East-West pipeline, while the US ordered another release of emergency oil reserves.
Despite a modest gain in September, the Nikkei recorded its first quarterly decline since the first quarter of 2025. The quarter was weighed down by the prolonged US-Iran conflict, rising bond yields and a July selloff in AI-related stocks.
