30-Sep-2026 | 12:02
Chicago Federal Reserve (Fed) President Austan Goolsbee has stated that the fact that we have been five and half years above inflation target is playing with fire. The US FOMC Member Michael Barr also noted that inflation as measured by the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index surged in the wake of the pandemic and with the escalation of the war in Ukraine, peaking at a 12-month rate of 7 percent in 2022. While the effects of tariffs may have diminished, high energy prices are still with us, and there is considerable uncertainty about when the conflict driving them may be resolved. John Williams, president and chief executive officer of the New York Fed also stated that It is imperative that we return inflation to our 2 percent target on a sustained basis. To do so, we must make certain that adverse inflationary disturbances do not become entrenched, and that any second-round effects on inflation remain muted, he noted.
