Economic Buzz: UK shop price inflation eases to 1.4% in September

UK shop price inflation eased to 1.4% year-on-year in September from 1.5% in August, with food inflation slowing to 2.5% from 2.8% and non-food inflation easing to 0.8% from 0.9%. Promotions helped lower meat, dairy and back-to-school prices, although poor European harvests lifted fruit prices and kept chocolate and confectionery costs elevated. Meanwhile, broader UK CPI inflation rose to 3.1% in August and is expected to move above 4% in early 2027 as higher energy prices linked to the Iran war add to inflationary pressures.
