Economic Buzz: Australia economic momentum improves in August

16-Sep-2026 | 12:39
The Westpac?Melbourne Institute Leading Economic Index was unchanged month-on-month in August, while its six-month annualised growth rate improved to -0.09% from -0.17%. The index remains slightly below trend, although momentum has strengthened since mid-year. Resilient household activity and rising data-centre investment are supporting a gradual stabilisation, while Westpac expects the RBA to maintain a hawkish stance before potentially raising rates after the October inflation data.
