Sensex gains 560 pts; private bank shares advance

The key equity barometers traded with modest gains in the early afternoon trade. The Nifty traded above the 23,900 level. Private bank shares extended gains for the second trading session.

At 12:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex jumped 559.63 points or 0.73% to 76,712.49. The Nifty 50 index added 72 points or 0.30% to 23,943.15.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index added 0.09% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 0.29%.

The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2,337 shares rose and 1,817 shares fell. A total of 243 shares were unchanged.

Derivatives:

The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of the market's expectation of volatility over the near term, slipped 4.52% to 10.83. The Nifty 29 September 2026 futures were trading at 24,080.50, at a premium of 137.35 points as compared with the spot at 23,943.15.

The Nifty option chain for the 29 September 2026 expiry showed a maximum call OI of 69.7 lakh contracts at the 25,000 strike price. A maximum put OI of 70.3 lakh contracts was seen at the 24,000 strike price.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty Private Bank index rose 0.47% to 27,879.40. The index jumped 0.99% in the two consecutive trading sessions.

RBL Bank (up 2.03%), HDFC Bank (up 1.17%), Bandhan Bank (up 0.97%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 0.9%) and Axis Bank (up 0.48%), Yes Bank (up 0.22%), and ICICI Bank (up 0.08%) rose.

Stocks in Spotlight:

Power Grid Corporation of India rose 0.25%. The company emerged as the successful bidder under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process for the Lakadia Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Phase-II transmission project in Gujarat.

Avalon Technologies advanced 3.67% after the company announced the formation of a joint venture (JV) with Zollner Elektronik AG for PCBA, box-build and system integration manufacturing in India.
