Sensex, Nifty decline for fourth day as IT, auto stocks drag

03-Sep-2026 | 17:00

The key equity benchmarks ended lower for the fourth consecutive session on Thursday, 3 September 2026, as gains in banking and realty stocks were offset by selling in IT, auto and other sectors.

The Nifty 50 opened at 23,997.95 and briefly climbed to an intraday high of 24,025.40 before gradually paring gains. The index slipped below 23,950 around noon and remained volatile through the afternoon, hovering near the 23,900 mark. Selling intensified in the final hour, pushing the index to a low of 23,873.45, where it closed, down 41 points or 0.17%.

Market sentiment remained cautious amid elevated crude oil prices and continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude climbed to around $96 a barrel as concerns over disruptions to energy supplies persisted, raising worries over inflation, bond yields and India's external balances.

Banking stocks bucked the broader trend after Indian banks mobilised more than $60 billion in the final 10 days of the RBI's special forex swap scheme. Foreign investor sentiment also improved in August, with FPIs investing $3.1 billion in Indian equities, the highest monthly inflow in nearly two years.

The broader market showed relative resilience, with mid- and small-cap stocks gaining. Investors continued to track crude oil prices, global bond yields and developments in the US-Iran conflict for further market direction.

The S&P BSE Sensex declined 417.49 points or 0.55% to 76,152.86. The Nifty 50 index lost 41 points or 0.17% to 23,873.45. In four consecutive sessions, the Sensex and the Nifty declined 1.44% and 1.25%, respectively.

Mahindra & Mahindra (down 1.25%), Infosys (down 0.85%) and Reliance Industries (down 0.81%) were major Nifty drags today.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index added 0.15% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 1.01%.

The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2,545 shares rose and 1,778 shares fell. A total of 228 shares were unchanged.
