25-Aug-2026 | 16:59

Domestic equity indices ended higher on Tuesday after a volatile session, recovering from early losses as investors picked up beaten-down stocks. Easing crude oil prices also provided some relief to market sentiment amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Investors assessed the latest US sanctions on Iran while easing concerns over an immediate disruption to oil supplies.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 286.98 points, or 0.37%, to 77,656.09, while the Nifty 50 advanced 115.50 points, or 0.48%, to 24,334.55.

Infosys (up 1.24%), Reliance Industries (up 0.55%) and ICICI Bank (up 0.54%) supported the Nifty. The Nifty reclaimed the 24,300 level after slipping to a low of 24,115.45 during the session. Healthcare, PSU bank and IT shares advanced, while private bank and metal stocks declined.

Trading remained volatile as investors adjusted positions ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry. Tuesday marked the first monthly Nifty 50 expiry under the new closing-auction session framework, adding to volatility toward the end of the session.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index rose 0.37%, while the BSE 250 SmallCap Index declined 0.17%.

Market breadth remained negative. On the BSE, 2,007 shares rose, while 2,330 shares declined and 196 shares were unchanged.

European shares advanced. Defence stocks led gains, while investors drew relief from the fact that Washington stopped short of imposing the broader secondary sanctions that markets had anticipated.

Investor focus remained on Washington's escalating pressure on Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced expanded sanctions targeting Iran and warned countries and companies maintaining business ties with Tehran that they could face secondary sanctions. However, the Treasury stopped short of imposing the broader penalties that markets had feared.

The announcement helped ease concerns about an immediate disruption to global crude supplies. Brent crude settled at $92.17 a barrel on Monday, down 2.4%, while oil prices extended their decline on Tuesday.

US Treasury yields also eased from recent highs. The 10-year Treasury yield was around 4.70% on Tuesday, with investors assessing the outlook for inflation, government borrowing and Federal Reserve policy.

The immediate focus is on Nvidia, which is scheduled to report its second-quarter fiscal 2027 results after the US market close on Wednesday, 26 August. The results are expected to provide a fresh test of investor confidence in the artificial intelligence trade.

Investors will also track the US July Personal Consumption Expenditures price index on Wednesday. The PCE inflation gauge is closely watched by the Federal Reserve and could influence expectations for the central bank's policy path.

Meanwhile, the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium is scheduled for 27-29 August. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is set to deliver his keynote speech on Friday, 28 August. His remarks will be closely watched for clues on the outlook for interest rates and inflation.
