Barometers trade with strong gains; private bank shares advance

The headline equity benchmarks extended their uptrend and hit fresh intraday highs in mid-afternoon trade supported by positive global cues, a stronger rupee and short covering after the recent seven-session losing streak. The expiry of weekly Sensex derivatives contracts on the BSE also kept traders active, with position adjustments and rollover-related activity likely to influence intraday volatility. The Nifty hovered near the 24,250 level. Private bank shares advanced after declining in the past two consecutive trading sessions.

At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, jumped 663.90 points or 0.86% to 77,573.58. The Nifty 50 index gained 164 points or 0.68% to 24,242.55.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index added 0.76% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 0.72%.

The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2,473 shares rose and 1,771 shares fell. A total of 250 shares were unchanged.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty Private Bank index fell 0.91% to 27,455. The index slipped 0.37% in the past two consecutive trading sessions.

Bandhan Bank (up 3.29%), RBL Bank (up 2.62%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 2.09%), Axis Bank (up 0.85%), HDFC Bank (up 0.73%), IDFC First Bank (up 0.66%), ICICI Bank (up 0.52%), Yes Bank (up 0.44%) and Federal Bank (up 0.08%) advanced.

Numbers to Track:

The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper rose 0.69% to 6.859 compared with the previous session close of 6.812.

In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 95.7075 compared with its close of 95.7350 during the previous trading session.

MCX Gold futures for the 5 October 2026 settlement rose 0.14% to Rs 1,58,220.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was down 0.13% to 98.60.

The United States 10-year bond yield rose 0.37% to 4.670.

In the commodities market, Brent crude for the October 2026 settlement jumped $2.06 or 2.23% to $93.66 a barrel.
