Economic Buzz: US consumer confidence cools in August

The Consumer Sentiment Index in the United States contracted by 7.6% on a monthly basis to 51.0 points in August, according to the preliminary report published by the University of Michigan on Friday. On an annual basis, the figure is seen to have decreased by 12.4%.
The Current Economic Conditions Index slid by 5.5% month-on-month and dropped by 16.0% compared to August 2025. The Index of Consumer Expectations fell 8.7% compared to July, sinking by 9.5% year-over-year.
Decreases in sentiment were seen across the political spectrum, with Republicans exhibiting the strongest month-to-month decline in August. Sentiment among Republicans is now 19% below readings just prior to the Iran conflict and the lowest since the 2024 election, the University of Michigan noted.
