Economic Buzz: Tokyo core inflation accelerates to six-month high

31-Jul-2026 | 10:39
Tokyo's core consumer inflation accelerated to 1.9% year-on-year in July, up from 1.6% in June, marking its fastest pace since January. While inflation remained below the Bank of Japan's 2% target for a sixth straight month, underlying price pressures strengthened, with core-core CPI, excluding fresh food and energy, rising to a four-month high of 2.0%. The data reflects the impact of higher oil prices and wage-driven inflation, following the BOJ's 25-basis-point rate hike in June aimed at containing mounting price pressures.
