The Eurozone's international trade deficit in goods stood at ?7.8 billion in May, down from a deficit of ?1.2 billion in April and lower than the ?15 billion surplus recorded a year earlier, the European Commission's statistical office Eurostat said on Thursday. In the European Union, the deficit came in at ?12.1 billion, compared to a surplus of ?12.7 billion in May 2025.

In the euro area, exports rose 0.1% year-on-year to ?243.6 billion, while imports rose 10% to ?251.4 billion. Eurostat said that the sharp decline in the trade balance was primarily driven by a widening of the energy deficit and by reduced surpluses in machinery and vehicles, as well as in chemical and related products.

In the EU, exports dropped 1.1% annually to ?215.7 billion, while imports increased 10.8% to ?227.8 billion.
