Economic Buzz: Japan household spending falls 0.5%, decline eases

05-Jun-2026 | 10:18
Japan's household spending fell 0.5% year-on-year in April 2026, improving from a 2.9% decline in March and marking the mildest contraction in five months. The data suggests easing inflationary pressures may be helping support consumer demand. Spending strengthened in categories such as transport and communication, housing, furniture, healthcare, and recreation, while expenditure on clothing, utilities, and education weakened. On a monthly basis, household spending rose 1.6%, rebounding from a 1.3% decline in March and signaling a gradual recovery in consumer activity.
