15-May-2026 | 08:01
The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits increased slightly last week, suggesting the U.S. labor market remains stable despite growing inflation concerns linked to rising energy prices from the Iran war.
According to the Labor Department, initial jobless claims rose by 12,000 to 211,000 for the week ending May 9. Meanwhile, continuing claims, which reflect the number of people still receiving unemployment benefits, increased by 24,000 to 1.782 million in the week ending May 2.
Recent employment data also showed steady job growth, with the U.S. economy adding 115,000 jobs in April. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%, indicating continued strength in the labor market.
