Economic Buzz: US inflation up from 3.3% to 3.8% in April

The annual inflation rate in the United States accelerated to 3.8% in April from 3.3% in March, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said on Tuesday. Month-on-month, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 0.6% after rising 0.9% in the previous month.
Core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.4% month-on-month and 2.8% annually, up from 2.6% in March. Meanwhile, food prices increased 0.5% on a monthly basis and advanced 3.2% year-on-year.
Energy remained the biggest contributor to inflation, with the index climbing 3.8% in April and surging 17.9% from a year earlier. Shelter prices also rose 0.6%, while airline fares, apparel, and household furnishings recorded further increases.
