Energy Preview: US rig count down 6.3% on year

For week ended May 1, 2026, the number of active oil and gas drilling rigs in the U.S. rose by 3 to reach 547, according to Baker Hughes' latest report. This follows a decline in four of the last six weeks. The rigs targeting crude oil increased by 1 to 408, while gas rigs also added 1, totaling 130. However, the overall rig count is down 37, or 6.3%, compared to the same period last year.
