Agri Buzz: Summer crop sowing gains 4.40% on year, oilseeds area spurts

The total area sown to summer-season crops has edged up 4.41% to 69.06 lakh hectares till 17 April so far this year, with maximum coverage under paddy, according to the agriculture ministry data. Rice has been sown in 30.64 lakh hectares till April 17 this year against 32.31 lakh tonne in the year-ago period, marking a drop of 5%. Pulses acreage increased to 15.47 lakh hectare compared to 13.49 lakh tonne, up 13.49%, while oilseeds acreage zoomed up 19.50% to 9.14 lakh tonne. Area sown to coarse cereals increased to 13.81 lakh hectares, up 13% on year.
