Agri Buzz: Soybean oil imports up impressively in last year

The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India has released the import data for vegetable oils (edible & non-edible) for Sept., 2025. Imports during the month totalled 1,639,743 tons compared to 1,087,489 tons in Sept., 2024 i.e. up by 51%. This includes 1,604,643 tons of edible oils and 35,100 tons of non-edible oils. In first eleven months of the oil year 2024-25 (Nov.,24-Sept.,25), total vegetable oil imports reached 14,330,723 tons, down by 3% from 14,775,000 tons in the same period last year. Following the increased in import duty difference between CPO and RBD Palmolein from 8.25% to 19.25% w.e.f. 31st May, 2025, made the import of refined oil uneconomic gradually reduced and in fact Sept ‘25 reported Nil import (after Apr.’21) compared to 84,279 ton in Sept.’24.

SEA noted further that during Nov.’24 – Sept. ’25, Palm Oil import sharply decreased to 6,960,813 tons from 8,169,893 tons in Nov’23 – Sept. ’24, While Soft Oil import has jumped to 7,021,987 tons from 6,366,063 tons for the same period of last year due to sharp increase in import of soybean oil. The Share of Palm Oil sharply decreased to 50% from 56% while Soft Oils increased to 50% from 44%. The soybean oil import surged 42% in last 11 months over previous 11 months.
