Incorporated in 1969, Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (SPIC) Limited is one of the leading fertiliser manufacturing companies that manufactures and sells Urea, a nitrogenous chemical fertiliser. SPIC Limited originated as by Dr M A Chidambaram and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO), a state-owned industrial development institution. In 1979, the company set up a Gas Hydrogen Recovery Unit to increase the production of Ammonia. Since then, the company has been constantly expanding. They set up a Urea plant in the UAE in 1997. In the same year, the company promoted a new venture Spic Electric Power Corporation Limited. In 2003, the company’s ammonia unit in Tuticorin was closed due to leakage in the pipeline. In 2015, the company’s plants in Tuticorin resumed production, and in 2019, they resumed the commercial production of Urea and Ammonia. The company’s large fertiliser complex can produce 6.2 lakh tons of Neem Coated Urea.
