History

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) is a Public Sector company. It came into existence as on October 23, 1989, to set up extra-high voltage alternating current and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines. The company was listed on BSE and NSE in 2007. The Government of India holds a 51.34% stake in the company, and Institutional Investors and the public hold the balance. In 2020, the company commissioned ± 800 kV Champa – Kurukshetra HVDC station Bipole-II. Power Grid also finished commissioning 11 Renewable Energy Management Centres (REMCs) for renewable energy integration for Govt. of India. In 2022, the company implemented 400KV, D/C, Jeerat (New) - Subhasgram (PM-JTL-TBCB) (214 CKM), which was commissioned in August 2022.

Business Segments

  • Transmission:It continuously works to operate and maintain its transmission assets with the aid of a transmission licensee to meet established criteria and achieve high availability.
  • Consultancy:The enterprise has gained competence in key fields such as power transmission, sub-transmission systems, distribution management, load dispatch, and communications both inside and outside of India. In addition, it has provided consulting services to numerous clients worldwide by utilising its capabilities and experience.
  • Telecom:The organization administers this segment with the brand name ‘POWERTEL. The organization is the only Telecom Service Provider in the Country having PAN India overhead Optic fibre network using Optical Ground Wire on power transmission lines.
As of March 31, 2023, the company had 14 Subsidiaries and few of them are listed below:
  • Powergrid NM Transmission Limited (PNMTL):Powergrid gained complete control of PNMTL on March 29, 2012, under Tariff based Competitive Bidding for establishing a Transmission System associated with IPPs of Nagapattinam / Cuddalore Area (Package A).
  • Powergrid Unchahar Transmission Limited (PUTL):It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Powergrid. It was gained complete control of by the organization in 2014.
  • Powergrid Southern Interconnector Transmission System Limited (PSITSL):PSITSL was gained complete control of by the organization in 2015 under tariff-based competitive bidding for the “Strengthening of Transmission System Beyond Vemagiri” Project on the build, own, operate and maintain (BOOM) basis.
