Economic Buzz: Australia retail sales rise 0.2% in May but momentum remains weak

02-Jul-2025 | 09:56
Retail sales in Australia rose 0.2% in May 2025, recovering slightly after showing no change in April. The modest growth was driven by stronger spending on clothing, footwear, and department stores, which bounced back from previous declines. However, household goods and food retailing remained subdued, with cafes and takeaway services also showing no growth. Regionally, sales picked up in Western Australia, the ACT, and Victoria, while Tasmania recorded a small dip. On a yearly basis, sales grew 3.3%, marking the slowest annual pace in six months, signaling cautious consumer sentiment amid persistent cost pressures.
