Commodities Buzz: US iron ore exports slide 18% on year in September 2024

U.S. mine production and shipments of iron ore in September 2024 were estimated to be 3.85 million metric tons (Mt) and 4.44 Mt, respectively. Average daily production of iron ore was 128,000 metric tons (t), a slight decrease from August and essentially unchanged from that in September 2023. Average daily shipments of iron ore were 148,000 t, a 3% increase from those in August and an 8% decrease from those in September 2023. Iron ore mine stocks were estimated to be 2.17 Mt at the end of September 2024, a 21% decrease from those held at the end of August and a 15% decrease from those held at the end of September 2023. U.S. exports of iron ore were 846,000 t in September 2024, a 26% decrease from those in August and an 18% decrease from those in September 2023. U.S. imports of iron ore were 374,000 t in September 2024, more than quadruple those in August and a 17% decrease from those in September 2023.
