Sensex jumps 233 pts; private bank stocks in demand
At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, jumped 232.58 points or 0.32% to 73,756.84. The Nifty 50 index rose 82.95 points or 0.34% to 23,202.50.
The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index gained 0.88% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index added 0.96%.
The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 2,602 shares rose and 1,512 shares fell. A total of 192 shares were unchanged.
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of the market's expectation of volatility over the near term, slipped 6.90% to 15.85.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Private Bank index advanced 1.37% to 26,479.10. The index shed 0.67% in the past trading session.
Federal Bank (up 3.53%), RBL Bank (up 3.39%), IDFC First Bank (up 3.28%), IndusInd Bank (up 2.27%) and ICICI Bank (up 1.8%), Axis Bank (up 1.4%), Yes Bank (up 1.35%), Bandhan Bank (up 1.26%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 0.5%) and HDFC Bank (up 0.03%) rose.
Numbers to Track:
The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper shed 0.63% to 6.905 compared with the previous session close of 6.949.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 95.3350 compared with its close of 95.6100 during the previous trading session.
MCX Gold futures for 5 August 2026 settlement shed 0.02% to Rs 1,54,783.
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was down 0.10% to 99.90.
The United States 10-year bond yield rose 0.04% to 4.554.
In the commodities market, Brent crude for August 2026 settlement fell $1.70 or 1.80% to $92.55 a barrel.
Stocks in Spotlight:
Ather Energy added 1.57% after the company said that its board will meet on Friday (12 June 2026) to consider a fund-raising proposal through one or more instruments.
Redington jumped 4.79% after Apple announced major software and artificial intelligence upgrades at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
Hindustan Copper advanced 1.59% following the appointment of Anupam Misra as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the company.
